There are 4 traits that define all great pitchers.

  1. Talent:  I know, thank you Captain Obvious.  But talent is more than just natural God-given ability.  True talent is when you take your God-given abilities and combine them with intense preparation to become a dominating pitcher.  90 Mph fastballs are awesome, but they are useless if you can’t throw them in a real game under real pressure.
  2. Preparation:  This is the Mental Side of Pitching.  This might be the most overlooked and undervalued part of pitching to young pitchers.  The number 1 issue I personally see in young pitcher’s is that they don’t really know what they are doing.  So instead of trying to learn how to throw 3 or 4 pitches, try to learn 1 great pitch.  Then you can add a 2nd great pitch that you can consistently throw for strikes.  Now you are starting to become a real pitcher.  It’s all in the preparation.
  3. Competitiveness:  This is my favorite one.  Are you really competitive?  I mean can’t sleep at night competitive.      This not that you hate to lose.  Everyone I know hates to lose.  Competitiveness is knowing what will it take to win.  What do YOU have to learn?  What do YOU need to practice?  When do YOU get to Perform in a real game.  YOU won’t be beat!  You will outwork, out hustle and have more heart than anyone, Period.  Winning feels good doesn’t it.
  4. Ability to Pitch through Adversity:  This is the foundation of mental toughness.  If you pitch long enough against good competition you will eventually have to pitch through some adversity.  Your ability to remain focused and aggressive will define your pitching career.  This might be the single greatest pitching skill you can ever learn.  If you master the ability to pitch through adversity every coach you ever play for will love you.

You don’t need permission to be great.  So quit asking.

Hesitation is a motivation killer.

You can be an incredible pitcher if you really want to.

The question is Do YOU?

P.S.  Tell someone today that you want to be great.  Then go do it.

I know it’s shocking but…

Nothing Shocking

90% of Pitching is Mental.

If you are looking for quick fix to becoming an Elite, Mentally Tough Pitcher…

You need to look for coaching advice somewhere else.

But I have a feeling that You know that there is no quick fix to being a Dominating, Mentally Tough Pitcher.

If I am right about You…Keep on Reading

The Real Truth

I didn’t invent pitching.  But, you probably already knew that.

You need to Trust that the Coaching and Training you get is going to help you be a better pitcher.

I get that and wouldn’t have it any other way.

So first, let’s get rid of all the excuses.

  • Mental Toughness is a learned behavior (You Can Do It.)
  • Confidence is the foundation of mental toughness
  • Knowledge and Trust is the source of our Confidence

Now that we know that knowledge is the source of our confidence we have to figure out what information we need to learn to develop mental toughness.

Ask Yourself the following questions.

  1. Do you know what it takes to be an elite pitcher?
  2. Do you have your pitching mechanics on video?
  3. Do you have a Pre-Season, In-Season and Post Season Strength and Conditioning program?
  4. Do You have a Pre-Season, In-Season and Post season throwing program.
  5. Do you have a detailed pre-game routine?
  6. Do you have a detailed pre-pitch routine?
  7. Do you have a detailed post game routine?
  8. Do you use scouting reports to prepare for each team?
  9. Do you have a game day pitching plan for each team?
  10. Do you practice fielding your position as a pitcher?
  11. Do you use visualization to prepare for each game?
  12. Do you know if your pitching coach is helping you?

The trust and confidence that you have in each of these aspects make up the Mental Side of Pitching.

The only way you will ever be a mentally tough pitcher is if you take the time to learn and practice what it takes to confidently throw great pitches in real games.

The Mental Side of Pitching is every aspect of how you prepare to pitch.

Mental Toughness is the result of that preparation combined with your competitiveness, ability to remain poised under pressure and the ability to pitch through adversity.

Preparation is the heart and soul of mental toughness.

How do you prepare?
